HSLDA will defend member families whose right to home school is challenged.

The Home School Legal Defense Association exists to defend and protect the constitutional right of parents to direct the education of their children. It was founded in 1983 to bring together a large number of home schooling families so that each can have a low-cost method of obtaining quality legal defense. They give families the freedom to home school without the fear of facing legal threats alone.

Advocacy in the courtroom: Each year, thousands of member families receive legal consultation by letter and phone, hundreds more are represented through negotiations with local officials, and dozens are represented in court proceedings. The vast majority of the legal threats member families face are successfully resolved through their early intervention. For those families who do end up in court, HSLDA provides full representation at every stage of legal proceedings at no cost to the family.

Advocacy on Capitol Hill. HSLDA tracks federal legislation affecting home schooling and parental rights. HSLDA works to defeat or amend bills that endanger home schooling, but also acts proactively, introducing legislation to protect and preserve the freedoms we hold dear.

Advocacy in state legislatures. At the invitation of state home school organizations, HSLDA assists individual states with drafting language to improve their home school legal environment and to fight harmful legislation.
